Functional Mushroom Gummies vs. Magic Mushroom Gummies: What's the Difference?

Search for "mushroom gummies" and much of what comes up is about psychedelic products and safety warnings. That is a different product from what MycoGami makes. This guide explains the difference so you know what you are buying.

Two very different products share one name

Functional mushroom gummies are made with mushrooms people have cooked with and brewed as tea for a long time, such as lion's mane, reishi, turkey tail and cordyceps. They do not contain psilocybin, and they are not psychoactive.

Psychedelic or "magic" mushroom gummies are made with or claim to contain psilocybin or other compounds, such as those from Amanita mushrooms. Public health agencies have warned about some of these products. They are a separate category and have nothing to do with functional mushrooms.

How to tell which kind you are looking at

  • Read the mushroom species on the label. Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus), reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) and cordyceps are functional mushrooms.
  • Look for a full supplement facts panel with serving size and amount per serving.
  • Check for third-party certifications, such as USDA Organic.
  • Be careful with products that make vague or dramatic promises or hide their ingredients behind a "proprietary blend" with no species listed.

As with any supplement, read the label and talk with your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition.
